The City of Cottonwood Heights is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as our next Community & Economic Development Director. This department head position is essential to the city's strategic development, responsible for land use planning, business support, sustainability programs, and shaping Cottonwood Heights as a vibrant place to live and work.
This position provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Community and Economic Development Department, encompassing functions such as building inspection, short- and long-range planning, zoning, business licensing, sustainability initiatives, geographic information systems (GIS), and general customer service operations at City Hall. Responsible for managing departmental operations, directing staff, and aligning programs with city goals and policies. Oversees and ensures compliance with contracts assigned to the department, including monitoring timelines and coordinating renewals. Actively engages in relevant professional associations and maintains required certifications.

What You'll Do
In this role, you will:
Direct all planning, zoning, building inspection, business licensing, and GIS functions.
Guide the development of long-range community and economic strategies.
Supervise departmental staff and manage contract personnel.
Lead business attraction and retention efforts, including work with the South Valley Chamber of Commerce and CDRA.
Coordinate with other departments, elected officials, commissions, and regional agencies to achieve the city's development goals.
Administer budgets, manage grants, monitor compliance, and oversee implementation of planning and sustainability policies.
Represent the city in professional and public forums, ensuring responsiveness to residents and the business community.
What We're Looking For
Education: Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field (Master's preferred).
Experience: 8+ years in community or economic development, including 4 years in a supervisory role.
Skills: Strong leadership, planning, budgeting, communication, and public engagement.
Certifications: APA membership; NIMS 100 & 200 required; must be bondable and pass background/drug screening.
